INDICAN (indoxyl sulfate) is a product derived from the bacterial breakdown of tryptophan into indole in the small intestine. INDICAN levels are directly linked to bacterial activity in the gut. Elevated levels indicate intestinal toxemia or overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria, digestion of indigestible food in the intestines, upset stomach (constipation, malabsorption), intestinal disorders and pancreatic insufficiency.
The INDICAN test (Obermeyer) is a fast -15-minute- and accurate tool for identifying protein sepsis in the gastrointestinal tract in a urine sample .
